About
The Étoilé project aims to produce a document-centric desktop and post-desktop environment. The project is built on top of GNUstep, a high-quality Free Software implementation of the OpenStep specification from Sun and NeXT and popularised by Apple as Cocoa.
The basic unit within an Étoilé system is the object. These are arranged within projects; an abstraction combining aspects of both folders and virtual desktops.
To see the most recent activity on the Étoilé repository, look at our statistics page (http://cia.vc/stats/project/etoile).
This page hasn't been updated for a while. The project is still active, however. We are in process of migrating to a new site (http://etoileos.com/). When the content has all been moved over, we will transfer the DNS. Until then, we apologise for the infrequent updates.

- GNUstep, on which Étoilé is built, was awarded two Google Summer of Code (http://code.google.com/soc/gnustep/about.html) places this year. This will fund two students to work on GNUstep over the summer period. One of the two will be mentored by Étoilé developer David Chisnall, working on some missing AppKit classes and tidying (read: rewriting) the GNUstep text system. While neither student will be working on Étoilé directly, anything that strengthens GNUstep will benefit Étoilé.
